Heart Valve Surgery

If the heart valves are malfunctioning, then it may cause severe effects in the health of human beings. The valves of the heart as we know help in the rhythmic motion of the blood from the heart and it helps in the formation of heart beats which are of primary importance.

In General:

Nowadays Heart Valve surgery has become a common one. The heart valve diseases if not cured by medicines can only be cured by the Heart Valve Surgery. As we know these heart valves are the most important parts of the heart which helps in blood circulation. The blood is pumped to all parts of the body due to the rhythmic motion of the heart in our body. Many have benefited from this procedure of Heart Valve Surgery and have regained those happy days in life!!! The heart congestive disease is also some times due to the valve malfunctioning.

Even if a valve say the Tricuspid Valve malfunctions, then the heart’s functions are disturbed to an extent that it causes severe problems to the patient even Death if untreated for a long time. So it is essential that the valve is replaced immediately. This valve replacement can be obtained from a pig which is a porcine valve, from another human being (cadaver valve). There is a problem of transplantation from other person as the donor has to be certified Brain Dead to carry out this process. Also some drugs have to be given to the patient to prevent the rejection

Risks:

If you think that this process is all that easy, then think again as it is a complicated process as well. Let us take a look on some of the risks involved. The first one is the development of the infection called Endocarditis. This is mainly due to the rejection of the valve by the body, but it may also occur due to the malfunctioning of the valve. So not in all cases it is true. To prevent this process from happening, the only way is to give immune suppressive drugs which helps in preventing this rejection process. But these drugs may not be the best option for patients having heart problems for a long time like poor heart valve and other congenital heart diseases.

The surgery should be conducted only after making the person ready such as dental cleaning in patients having prosthetic heart valves. Also antibiotics may be needed just before the surgery. Also there are restrictions if the patient has already undergone a surgery of the valve.

Also recommended are some of the anti coagulants before the surgery in order to make sure that there is no clotting process taking place so as to ensure safe surgery. A blood clot forming will block the artery and it may result in even Cardiac Arrest. For that purpose too there are antibiotics available today.
